Iâm to blame, Pete. Thereâs no way around it.â Charles looked out the window inPeteâs bedroom. There was nothingto see but the clapboard wall of the house next door, five feet away, fading in the twilight. But he couldnât help wanting to watch for any sign ofdanger, for anysignofVictor.
âThatâs bull!â Pete said. He stretched out on the mattress, his hands behind his head. âItâs not your fault. How could you know? I mean, how could you?â
Charles glanced at his brother, who was calmly gazing up at him. Pete wore a plaid shirt and blue jeans with a hole in the left knee. He seemed paler than usual, but otherwise he looked like his old self, the sparkle back inhis dark eyes.
âRight,â Charles chuckled grimly. âHow could I know that a vampire would do such a thing? Can you believe this, Pete? A vampire.â
Theyâd spent the past two evenings talking about Victor, with Pete trying to absorb Charlesâs explanation of Victorâs history, of the Dark Kingdom, of Kyleâs nature. Charles had described the horrifying encounter in the mausoleum. Pete needed little convincing, not with the wounds on his throat and his own undeniable experience of Victorâs power. For two nights, Charles had slept on the floor on a blanket next to Peteâs bed to protect his brother, getting up often in the night to check on his parents. He left the house before they got up so he wouldnât have to explainwhyheâd slept there.
Charles finally pulled himself away from the window. He was tired from two sleepless nights. He pulled the chair out from the desk, turned it toward Pete, and sat down.
âYou canât guard me forever, you know,â Pete said, turning his head toward his brother. âAnd what about Kyle? Heâs all alone at your apartment. What if Victor does decide to hurt him?â
Kyle had been staying in the apartment since the encounter with Victor the other night. Where else could he go? âVictor wonât hurt him,âCharles said confidently.
âYou mean because of his plans for the two of them?â Pete said.
Charles nodded. Heâd told Pete about Victorâs efforts to persuade Kyle to joinhimas a predator ofthe night.
âBut if Kyle keeps resisting, wonât Victor finally hurt him? Canât he do that? Force himto become a vampire?â
âI told you, it has to be a free choice.â Charles rubbed his eyes. He knew he needed to sleep. He should stretch out on the floor right now. But he was too wired to rest.
Pete sat up in the bed, leaning back against the wall to face Charles. âYoucare a lot about him, donât you?â
âOf course. You would, too, if youâd seen the two of them together. Heâs under Victorâs thumb.â Charles realized he sounded defensive. The question had made him uncomfortable. He tried to reassure himself that Pete only meant that Charles was a good friend, but it didnât help. His nerves were stilltaut.
âBut theyâre lovers. Maybe thatâs why Victor has so much control.â
âTheyâre not lovers anymore!â Charles snapped, full of jealousy at the thought of Kyle still clinging to Victor.
